Haki na Sheria Initiative

Overview

Haki na Sheria Initiative (HSI) was founded in 2010 by a group of Kenyan Somali law students in Garissa County who saw, first-hand, the deep injustice faced by communities in Northern Kenya. What began as a small collective speaking out against systemic discrimination has grown, slowly, and with intention, into an organisation rooted in the pursuit of justice and equity.

Our Core Objectives

Haki na Sheria is a leading human rights organization working in Northern Kenya at the Kenya–Somalia border. Founded in 2010 by Kenyan Somali law students, we advance citizenship rights, paralegal training, and access to justice for marginalized communities.

Promoting Legal Identity

Promoting Legal Identity

We empower marginalized communities by facilitating access to vital legal documents, including birth certificates and national IDs. By securing these fundamentals, we ensure that every individual is recognized by the state and can exercise their full rights as citizens.

Our Impact

Haki na Sheria operates in the northern coastal and northeastern regions of Kenya, with a strong presence in Garissa, Tana River, and Lamu counties. These areas face unique challenges related to access to justice, marginalization, and civic participation.

Our community-based approach allows us to work closely with local populations, address systemic inequalities, and promote human rights in some of the most underserved regions of the country. Through our presence in these counties, we are building bridges between communities and the justice system, empowering people to claim their rights and shape their futures.
